There’s a guy on CL looking to trade his 99 Rangie for a Quad. I happen to have a Quad and wouldn’t mind having one of Great Britain’s finest.
There are a few red flags though. In the Trader’s own words “The not so good is the running condition.”
Hmm..

“The not so good is the running condition.”
So in other words, it’s up to factory spec.

Getting it going again after swapping it for a quad would make a great story.

“It overheats. I believe it is the thermostat.”
To his credit, my Tercel would overheat but it was the thermostat I found.
To his discredit, this line is typically full of shit when a car is being sold. Plausible-deniability at best, fraud at worst.

I don’t think a 16 year old Rover with an engine swap that is having problems running would qualify to be considered as “Great Britain’s finest” anything. Also, prepare to dump massive amounts of Benjamins into it.
That’s a hard “No” from me.

Odds are that he knows exactly what’s wrong with it. There are too many hints in the ad. I’m still tempted though.

Well there’s a 95% that it being just the thermostat is a crock of shit. On the bright side, if it’s the water pump, that may also be the issue with the heater core and I don’t know about you but I’d much rather replace a water pump than a heater core.

Thankfully it’s Monday. if this were Friday night I’d have had a twelve pack down and a scheduled deal!

Imma say no. The national park I work at swapped a quad to a west-coast park for not-quite-seaworthy-but-maybe-good-enough-for-a-lake boat last summer, with the goal of turning it into a rescue boat. Age and original retail price for the boat are about equal to that Landie’s. It spent all of two days in its slip this summer. They’ve spent over 10 grand on it, not counting getting it here, and it still isn’t working. The only things they haven't replaced yet are the outboards and the hull, and it looks like the outboards may be next.

Yikes!
I came to my senses. I am going to trade the Quad but for a Honda ATC 350x. As soon as we can test ride each others machines.

It’s never just a thermostat. The heater core needs new seals, not a complete replacement. Those seals are probably why it initially overheated, loss of coolant. That overheat probably toasted the head gaskets or the block. Or the engine they installed was used and shit to begin with. Also because 4.6’s are becoming exceedingly difficult to find and are expensive they probably just installed a cheaper used 4.0. And we haven’t even covered the possibility of a plugged radiator, burned up fuse/relay box preventing operation of the auxiliary fans, other coolant leaks, or a dead fan clutch.
Wood dash sticker kit? Super classy.
And the coup de gras (sp?)..... The body control module is VIN coded. So that used one he is so graciously willing to part with is hardly any better than a paper weight.
On the plus side, it appears to be Niagara grey, which in my humble opinion is one of the best looking colors ever put on a rover product. It also looks fantastic with black steelies.
